Service of Comfort and Hope
Sunday, November 14th ~ 2:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary
What is hope? The dictionary defines hope as a desire of some good, accompanied with an expectation of obtaining it or a belief that it is obtainable. As Christians our hope is the expectation of the fulfillment of God’s promises.
Nothing pulls on the heartstrings of hope more strongly than the loss of a loved one. Each person’s grief journey is unique, but there are predictable stages that people generally experience.
A person who suffers the death of a loved one not only loses that person but also the life he or she built with that person. They spent time together, shared responsibilities, enjoyed common interests and activities and made plans for the future. They had a pattern of relying on each other for vital elements that made their lives whole.
Our modern way of life makes it difficult for us to grieve. Often people are forced to carry their grief within. Well meaning friends offer sympathy immediately after the loss has occurred, but from that point on it’s implied that life should be business as usual again.
In an effort to reach out to the community and provide an opportunity for those who have lost a loved one to experience Christian community, the Sanibel Community Church Stephen Ministry team is sponsoring a Service of Comfort and Hope. The service will be held at the church on November 15, at 2:00 p.m. Prayer, music, scripture readings and a meditation provided by Pastor Daryl Donovan and Pastor Ed VanderHey will be accompanied by a time for sharing memories and feelings of loss. Refreshments will be served.
In Stephen Ministry congregations, lay caregivers (called Stephen Ministers) provide one-to-one Christian care to the bereaved, hospitalized, terminally ill, separated, divorced, unemployed, relocated, and others facing a crisis or life challenge. Stephen Ministry helps pastors and congregations provide quality caring ministry for as long as people need it.
